Synapse : in neuroanatomy, the gap between the dendrite of one neuron and the axon of the next. A neural signal crosses the synapse by means of neurotransmitters; the electrical propagation along the first neuron induces the release from vesicles of the neurotransmitters, which diffuse across the gap and trigger receptors on the next neuron, inducing a new electrical signal.
